Waymo tests self-driving cars with no safety driver
Alphabet-owned company Waymo has started testing self-driving cars on public roads, with no safety drivers on board. The company describes its fully self-driving vehicles as its ‘safest, most advanced vehicles on the road today’. The tests are conducted in Chandler, Arizona, USA (part of the Phoenix metro area), and the fully driverless cars are able to go anywhere within the defined space. For now, passengers in the test are Waymo employees, but the company plans to expand the trial to Chandler residents members of a driverless ride hailing service trial that it launched in early 2017. Waymo also plans to broaden the geographic area covered by the trial, initially by covering the the entire Phoenix metro area.
