VeriSign report show growth in domain name registrations

In the second quarter of 2023, there were 356.6 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs). The .com and .net TLDs had a combined total of 174.4 million registrations

The Domain Name Industry Brief quarterly report by VeriSign, shows that global domain name registrations reach a total of 356.6 million across all top-level domains (TLDs), marking a 0.5% increase from the previous quarter with 1.7 million new registrations.

Although there was a slight decrease in registrations for the .com and .net TLDs compared to the first quarter of the year, the overall growth compared to the previous year was there by 0.1 percent.
The .com domain alone accounted for 161.3 million registrations, while the .net domain recorded 13.1 million registrations.

Domain name stats

  • Country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) also experienced growth, with a total of 137.0 million registrations, representing a 0.8% increase from the first quarter. On a yearly basis, ccTLDs added 2.7 million new registrations.
  • New generic TLDs (ngTLDs) also demonstrated growth, with 28.1 million registrations at the end of the second quarter, marking a 3.0% increase.
  • The top TLDs by reported domain names were .com, .cn, .de, .net, while the top 10 ccTLDs, as of June 30, 2023, included .cn, .de, .uk, .nl, .ru, .br, .au, .fr, .eu, and .it. These ccTLDs accounted for 59.4% of all ccTLD domain name registrations, highlighting their dominance in the market.

Furthermore, there are a total of 308 global ccTLD extensions delegated in the root zone as of June 30, 2023.
