USA seizes domain names used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has seized 92 domain names that ‘were unlawfully used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to engage in a global disinformation campaign’ and were found to violate federal law. According to the DoJ, four of the domains – purported to be genuine news outlets – were used to spread Iranian propaganda to influence US domestic and foreign policy in violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). The rest of the domains were found by the DoJ to spread Iranian propaganda to Western Europe, the Middle East, and South East Asia. The DoJ also noted that all 92 domains were being used in violation of US sanctions targeting both the Government of Iran and the IRGC.
