US president Biden issues executive order addressing the ‘right to repair’

The US president Joe Biden has issued a far-ranging Executive Order on promoting competition in the US economy. The Order includes 72 initiatives aimed at tackling some of the most pressing competition problems across the country’s economy. One of the initiatives is dedicated to the independent repair of consumer electronics. The Order aims to allow users to repair their own devices by limiting manufacturers from barring self-repairs or third-party maintenance of their products. To this end, the Order encourages the Federal Trade Commission to issue rules against restrictions on using independent repair shops or doing DIY repairs of users’ own devices and equipment.
