US Defense Department launches AI strategy

The US Department of Defense (DoD) launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy meant to ‘accelerate the adoption of AI and the creation of a force fit for our time’. As part of the strategy, the DoD plans to launch several initiatives to deploy AI to enhance military decision-making and operations across key mission areas, as well as to put in place a common foundation to enable decentralised development and experimentation of AI. The DoD also intends to provide comprehensive AI training and bring critical AI skills into service by recruiting and partnering with AI experts. In addition, the DoD will engage with commercial, academic, and international partners to help address global challenges, align civilian AI leadership with defence challenges and contribute to efforts dedicated to identifying and advancing emerging technologies and applications. The department also commits to developing its vision and guiding principles for using AI in a lawful and ethical manner and to consulting other stakeholders in advancing AI ethics and safety in the military context. The implementation of the strategy will be coordinated by the Joint Artificial Intelligence Centre, whose first task will be to accelerate the delivery and adoption of AI capabilities across the military.
