On 24 February 2023, the Department of Commerce’s US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced a partnership to promote innovation in climate and green technology areas.

They will set up a work-sharing program focused on the intersection of intellectual property (IP), climate and environmental technologies to bring the agencies to work together and promote innovation in these areas. USPTO will provide intellectual property training to NOAA employees and support other initiatives, while NOAA will provide training to USPTO patent examiners on climate and environmental technologies and advise on green initiatives.

The partnership will be formalized through an upcoming memorandum of understanding. In addition, at the end of the program, an assessment will be conducted to determine whether an extension is to be granted.
