UNESCO gets closer to adopting recommendation on AI ethics

Representatives of members states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have agreed on the draft text of a recommendation on the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI), which is set to become a global first once it is adopted during UNESCO’s General Conference in November. The draft recommendation is intended to establish a global framework for ensuring that AI-driven digital transformations promote human rights and contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development goals. It also  includes provisions on how to ensure that real-world biases are not replicated online, and how technology can be developed in ways which ensure fair and ethical applications. The recommendation also calls on UNESCO member countries to create data policies which protect personal and sensitive data.
