Understanding the digital landscape

Rebeca Grynspan’s (Secretary-General at UNCTAD) insights highlighted the substantial expansion of the digital economy, unveiling both its promise and peril. The discourse shed light on the crucial aspect of balancing innovation with responsible regulation, aiming to ensure ethical and equitable digital technology usage. Acknowledgement of collaborative efforts emphasised the necessity for a unified approach towards shaping an inclusive digital future.

Inclusive digital economy

H.E Febrian A. Ruddyard (President of the Trade and Development Board at Indonesia) brought attention to UNCTAD’s role in inclusive digital economic outcomes, while underscoring concerns about potential consolidation within the digital realm. Moderator Isabelle Kumar echoed the urgency of addressing digital divides, environmental sustainability, and AI impact, stressing the alignment of digital endeavors with the SDGs to accelerate meaningful actions.

Strategies and sustainable development goals

Switzerland’s stance, as portrayed by H.E. Benedikt Wechsler (Ambassador at Division of Digitalization, Switzerland), emphasised the need for sustainable digital infrastructure development, affordability, and leveraging digital tools for remote job creation. This aligns with initiatives focused on SDG alignment and fostering a conducive environment for responsible digitalization.

AI, knowledge preservation, and Africa’s potential

Insights from Jovan Kurbalija (Executive Director at DiploFoundation) highlighted the potential of AI-driven reporting in knowledge preservation, advocating for aligning AI development with SDGs. Africa’s unique potential in the digital landscape was underscored, emphasising that it is crucial for Africa to prioritise infrastructure development and utilise its existing knowledge and resources to unlock the benefits of AI.

Digitalization as a solution and governance

Amina Mohamed (Deputy Secretary-General at United Nations) emphasised digitalization as a potential solution amid global crises, stressing the need for joint vision, governance, and harnessing digital potential to advance towards the SDGs. Digitalization can bridge existing gaps between nations and ensure that the benefits of technological advancements are accessible to all. However, it is essential to address the digital divide and ensure equal access to digital technologies and opportunities, noted Mohamed.

Human interaction, entrepreneurship, and trade

Birame Sock’s (CEO at Kweli & eTrade for Women Advocate) insights underlined the significance of human interaction with technology, Africa’s digital potential, and the challenges faced by female entrepreneurs. Advocacy for supportive legislation, trade standards, infrastructure development, and private sector involvement emerged as crucial aspects in fostering economic growth and innovation in Africa.
