At the UNCTAD eWeek 2023 session titled ‘G20 Contributions to Digital Economy and Digitalization for Development‘ , a panel of experts conducted an in-depth examination, here are their valuable insights into the nuances of digitalization, inclusivity, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the pivotal role of international platforms like the G20.

Brazil’s G20 Presidency

Luciano Mazza de Andrade focused on upcoming Brazil’s G20 presidency that will put a strong emphasis on digitisation and the digital economy. It will continue discussions initiated by previous presidencies, about the role of AI in sustainable development; digital inclusion and meaningful connectivity; addresses online information integrity, and contributes to the global debate on digital governance.

Digital transformation and inclusivity

Mira Tayyiba’s discourse reiterated the transformative potential of digital technology in boosting economic growth, especially in countries like Indonesia. Inclusive strategies take center stage in Indonesia’s digital journey, prioritizing equal access to digital technology and its benefits. This commitment is pivotal in bridging the persistent digital divide, ensuring that all individuals, irrespective of background, have equitable opportunities for growth and development.

AI and governance

Jovan Kurbalija’s speach offeed a comprehensive exploration of AI and digital governance, covering various perspectives on AI risks, SDGs’ potential, international cooperation, governance improvements, support for developing countries, open-source AI, local contributions, and regional wisdom. Kurbalija in his deliberation confrontd the media’s sensationalized portrayal of AI, offering a more tempered perspective. Contrary to the alarmist narratives, he suggests that the reality of AI might be less daunting than commonly depicted.

Advocating for a bottom-up AI approach, Kurbalija stresses the importance of preserving collective wisdom. He highlights the need to broaden access to valuable insights, preventing their concentration in the hands of a select few corporations. Kurbalija called for a comprehensive revamp of digital governance frameworks, Kurbalija emphasized the need to revisit and improve the existing policies established during the World Summit on Information Society.

Inclusive data governance

Rebeca Grynspan emphasized the importance of inclusive data governance and leaving no one behind in the digital revolution. Highlighting the influential role of the G20 and the Global Digital Compact in shaping digital policies, Grynspan’s insights underscored the need for inclusive approaches to global digital cooperation.

G20’s role

H.E Febrian A. Ruddyard focused on the role that G20 in digital issues and digital economy. The emphasis on digital initiatives and bridging the digital divide emerges as a cornerstone of G20 discussions, acknowledging the imperative of inclusive digitalization for global economic growth.

Developing countries’ innovation

Renata Dwan spotlighted the innovative approaches of developing countries like India in digitalization – these countries often face greater needs and limited resources, which drive the creation of innovative solutions. The G20 serves as an essential platform for exchanging best practices and building knowledge in the digital economy domain, stated Dwan.

Youth, AI, and healthcare

Farhan Kurnia Mayendri’s speeches called the need for the youth to adapt and align their vision with the digital changes around us. He emphasises the significance of policies that empower individuals to evolve with the changing landscape. Furthermore, Farhan asserts that the voices of young people, who are well-versed in the digital age, should be accepted and considered in the regulation of these changes.
