UN Security Council holds open debate on countering terrorist narratives

The United Nations Security Council has held an open debate on countering the narratives and ideologies of terrorism. During the debate, the Council asked the Counter-Terrorism Committee to present a proposal for a comprehensive international framework on the matter by 30 April 2017. The debate also included an intervention on terrorists’ use of the Internet by Steve Crown, Vice-President and Deputy General Counsel of Microsoft Corporation. According to Crown, the scale of the terrorist challenge is ‘daunting’ for the Internet industry. He stressed the need for the international community to engage in public-private partnerships. ‘If there were an elegant solution, industry would have adopted it,’ he said, but there is no ‘silver bullet’ to stop terrorists from using the Internet.
