UN Human rights experts urge respect for online freedoms in Iran

The UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner notes that its four Special Rapporteurs ‘are very disturbed by the way the authorities have responded to the protests’ in Iran: UN experts urge respect for protesters’ rights. This is a response to the ongoing situation in Iran, described by Reporters Without Borders as a crackdown on protests where the Iranian regime targets the freedom to inform, and condemns the arrests of citizen-journalists and restrictions on social networks which affect some 60 cities in Iran. In spite of the crackdowns, an article in CBC news notes that Social media plays ‘extremely important’ role in Iranian protests despite censorship.
