UN High Commissioner for Human Rights weighs in on EU Digital Services Act

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, regarding the draft Digital Services Act. In the letter, the high commissioner stressed the importance of the EU Digital Services Act in strengthening human rights online, specifically by:

  • Establishing rules and processes for inclusive participation,
  • Requiring transparency on functioning of platforms,
  • Limiting takedown requirements for content which is strictly illegal,
  • Enhancing the redress mechanisms for unjustified decisions by digital services.
