Twitter to change retweet function to tackle election misinformation in USA

Twitter announced major changes to address misinformation in the US elections or other civic processes. The platform is applying restrictions on tweets with a misleading information label from US political figures, including candidates and campaign accounts, US-based accounts with more than 100 000 followers, and accounts that initiate relevant engagement. Users will be required to tap through a warning to see misleading tweets from these accounts. In addition, users will not be able to like, retweet, or reply to such tweets, which will no longer be algorithmically recommended by the platform. Twitter is aiming to reduce the visibility of misleading information in the US elections. The new policy will enter into force on 20 October and will be maintained until at least one week after the elections, when the platform will assess whether it is necessary to maintain the function.
