TSMC to build advanced AI chips in Japan

Kumamoto set to host cutting edge semiconductor manufacturing.

TSMC plans to produce advanced AI chips in Japan.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has confirmed plans to manufacture advanced AI semiconductors in Japan. The chips will be produced at a new facility in Kumamoto Prefecture as demand for AI hardware accelerates.

The project was announced in Tokyo during talks between Japan’s prime minister and TSMC chairman C C Wei. Leaders in Tokyo described the chip move as a major boost to Japan’s economic and technological security.

The Kumamoto plant will produce three nanometre chips used in AI, robotics and autonomous driving. Japan has identified these sectors as strategic priorities, with Tokyo backing domestic and foreign investment.

TSMC already operates a plant in Kumamoto and is expanding production in Japan alongside new facilities in the US. Officials in Tokyo say advanced chipmaking in Japan strengthens supply chains and global competitiveness.
