South Africa’s digital technology minister condemns destruction of telecommunication towers by 5G protesters

South Africa’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams issued a statement, condemning the burning and destruction of cell phone network towers. The destruction follows a resurgence in conspiracy theories that link the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic to 5G wireless networks. Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams said the misinformation campaign is a threat to investments to the telecommunication infrastructure. The statement noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) dispelled such myths and found no adverse health effect that is causally linked with the exposure to wireless technologies. It also stated that the ministry is finalising a draft policy for the 5G roll out, which will become available for public consultation. Along with the statement, the ministry released infographics to debunk the myths on 5G.
