Self-driving Uber kills Arizona woman in first fatal crash involving pedestrian

An experimental Uber self driving-vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona. Due to the high degree of automation in which the car was operating – level 3 on the SAE automation scale – the accident was the first of its kind. The vehicle was undergoing a nightly test drive when 49-year-old Elizabeth Herzberg was struck while attempting to cross the street. While there was a human driver ready to take control of the vehicle, she was still unable to react on time to avoid the fatality.
