The Regulatory Authority for Telecommunications of Côte d’Ivoire (ARTCI) is considering the implementation of shared active telecommunications infrastructure as part of the 5G network deployment in the country. They have issued a request for proposals from potential contractors to develop mechanisms for active infrastructure sharing within the scope of 5G networks. The primary objective of ARTCI is to choose a firm responsible for developing mechanisms to facilitate the sharing of active telecommunications infrastructure as part of the deployment of 5G networks in Côte d’Ivoire. Currently, 5G has not yet been introduced in Ivory Coast.

ARTCI is actively seeking a contracting firm to conduct a study on the formulation of a digital inclusion strategy. The study will address the challenges posed by emerging technologies and the metaverse in fostering digital economy growth. This highlights the authority’s recognition of the importance of inclusivity and the need to leverage new technologies for economic advancement.

In the telecom industry, MTN Group, a South African multinational telecommunications company, has recently launched 5G in Uganda and has plans to invest USD 1 billion for 5G rollout in Ghana. MTN Côte d’Ivoire has announced that its 5G services will be accessible by the start of the African Cup of Nations, Africa’s biggest football tournament, in January 2024.

Why is it important?
The implementation of shared active telecommunications infrastructure is seen as a crucial step in realizing the benefits of 5G technology. With ongoing studies on digital inclusion strategy and the challenges posed by emerging technologies, the aim is to foster economic growth and ensure the country’s readiness for the digital future.
