Project Loon reaches another milestone, providing Internet across a thousand kilometers
Alphabet’s project Loon reached a major milestone, providing internet signal across 1,000 kilometers. This is the farthest Loon has ever beamed internet access. The use of multiple balloons created a network that helped to overcome distance barriers.
This new milestone was achieved using a new custom antenna that stretched a 100km connection between two balloons ten times further across seven balloons. When a single balloon was being used, connectivity was lost if the balloon got too far from the point originating the connection. Alphabet is preparing to launch Loon as a commercial service in 2019.
