Press leaders call for the immediate release of detained journalists in Ethiopia

Jen Judson, president of the National Press Club, and Gil Klein, president of the National Press Club Journalism Institute, along with 16 other journalists signed a petition condemning the Ethiopian government for mistreating media practitioners, which they attribute to the shrinking press freedom

Over the course of 2021, two journalists, Dawit Kebede and Sisay Fida, were killed and over forty journalists and media staffers were detained.

In November 2021, the Ethiopian government issued an order banning media from covering military operations in Ethiopia.

The general ban came a week after the Ethiopian Media Authority issued a warning to some international media houses like BBC World News, CNN, Reuters and the Associated Press, regarding their coverage on the ongoing conflict.
