Pinterest, an American image-sharing and social media service, on Tuesday 11 April 2023 announced further safety measures for its platform, including a new set of parental controls and updated age verification policies, in response to an investigation that revealed how paedophiles had used the service to curate image boards of young girls.
The company will require users who have entered their age as under 18 to provide additional information to its third-party age verification partner when they attempt to change their date of birth in the Pinterest app. Additional parental controls will soon be available, including the ability for parents and guardians of minors to require a passcode before allowing their child to update certain account settings. Other teen safety measures implemented by Pinterest include restrictions against body shaming and the prohibition of beauty filters and weight loss advertisements.
