Organisations call G7 leaders not to undermine encryption

Over 30 global organisations, including ISOC, Access Now, APC, EFF, and WWW Foundation, have signed “A Joint Call to World Leaders for a Secure and Trusted Digital Economy” – an open letter to G7 leaders asking them to prioritise digital security and not undermine encryption. In the letter, the organisations remind the leaders that end-to-end encryption plays a critical role in securing the Internet, economy and citizens, and asked them to commit not to require, coerce or persuade device manufacturers, applications and service providers to modify products, turn of default encryption settings, and undermine encryption and security of services. The letter reflects on the commitment of G7 Ministers of the Interior, agreed in April, to encourage companies to establish exceptional (or lawful) access solutions for encrypted content to law enforcement authorities.
