OpenAI’s ChatGPT hits 500 million weekly users and growing
Ten percent of the world now uses ChatGPT, says Sam Altman.

ChatGPT now receives over 2.5 billion daily prompts, with more than 330 million originating from users in the United States, Axios has reported. In December, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the tool was handling over 1 billion queries daily. Usage has more than doubled since then.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT now has more than 500 million weekly active users, up from 300 million in December. By March, the number had surpassed 500 million, with Altman later confirming in May that daily usage had quadrupled over the past year.
He also told TED curator Chris Anderson that around 10% of the global population now uses ChatGPT. Although most users rely on the free version, OpenAI continues to explore new directions for the platform’s growth.
Reuters recently reported that the company is preparing to launch an AI-powered web browser designed to compete directly with Google Chrome. The new browser would build on recent developments such as ChatGPT Agent, which can autonomously perform tasks on a user’s device.
