INTERPOL uncovered an online sextortion ring that extracted US$47,000 from victims based in Hong Kong and Singapore. Evidence shows that cybercriminals sent a malicious mobile application to victims to engage in ‘naked chats’. Cybercriminals would then steal the victims’ contact lists and threaten to send victims’ intimate pictures and videos to their friends and family. INTERPOL, together with Hong Kong’s and Singapore’s police forces, traced 34 cases linked to the syndicate and arrested 12 suspected members of the sextortion ring.
