Nominet builds a map of the online world, on the basis of domain name registrations in ccTLD

Nominet, the registry for .uk, the country code top level domain (ccTLD) for the United Kingdom, has recently published a ‘map of the online world’ showing the number of domain name registration within each country’s ccTLD. According to the map, the ccTLDs with the largest number of registered domains are: .tk (Tokelau), .cn (China), .de (Germany), and .uk (United Kingdom). The map also shows that ‘online Europe’ is much larger than geographic Europe, while in the US the number of .us domains is not as large as probably expected. With regard to the large number of registered .tk, Nominet notes that this is because of the business model employed by the .tk registry, where domains can be registered for free.
