Nigeria takes a step forward to eliminate e-waste by creating an inter-agency committee

The Nigerian Government has inaugurated an inter-agency committee comprising officials to ensure an e-waste free environment. The committee aims to strengthen collaboration between the two agencies in managing e-waste, with NESREA having taken necessary steps to develop regulations and train importers of used electrical and electronic equipment on the effects of the importation of e-waste in the country.

The Nigerian government has inaugurated an inter-agency committee comprised of officials from the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to ensure an e-waste-free environment at the end of the digital switch over in Nigeria.

The committee was established to strengthen the collaboration between NESREA and NBC in the management of e-waste. The hazardous content inherent in e-waste posed a threat to human health and the environment, according to the Director-General of NESREA, Prof. Aliyu Jauro, who stressed the need to ensure that wastes were handled in an environmentally sound manner. NESREA has taken necessary steps to rid the country of e-waste, such as developing and operationalizing the National Environmental (Electrical and Electronic Sector) Regulations, 2022, developing a guide for importers of used electrical and electronic equipment, and carrying out training for importers of used electrical and electronic equipment on the effects of importation of e-waste in the country.
