Nigeria sets up digital ID steering committee

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari  has appointed a committee to steer digital ID chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha. Nigeria has previously attempted to issue digital ID, with  a 2018 initiative under the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) having issued 41 million National Identification Numbers (NIN). Other digital IDs include bank verification numbers, digital driver’s licenses and passports as well as biometric verification for services offered by various states. The committee is therefore expected to analyse existing  regulatory frameworks and propose an integrated roadmap for digital ID for the country which has  a population of over 200 million people.
