Nigeria lifts Twitter ban

Nigeria has lifted a ban on social networking site Twitter. The ban has been in place since June 2021 when the country ordered internet service providers to block access to the site. Kashifu Abdullahi, director general of the country’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), announced in a statement that Nigeria and Twitter had amicably resolved the dispute. Following the ban, Nigeria had argued that Twitter would not be allowed to operate in the country unless certain conditions were met. While Nigeria stated that a committee had negotiated with Twitter on the resumption, advocates have decried the lack of transparency of the negotiations. They argue that not disclosing the conditions under which Twitter has resumed amounts to private resolution of public issues.
