Nigeria focusses on issuance of digital ID numbers due to cash crunch

Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is now focusing on issuing identity numbers instead of identity cards. According to NIMC Director-General, Aliyu Aziz, the decision follows the recession that has resulted in reduced funding and reduced printing of ID cards.

Nigeria is the African continent’s most populous country with over 200 million people. The country has mulled over different digital ID systems, including mobile ID.
