New report signals challenges with data protection compliance in Uganda

According to Global Voices, despite the recent update of Ugandan legislation on data protection rights, a new report indicates that a majority of Ugandans are still not guaranteed to be able to exercise those rights in daily practice. After the entry into force of Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act in May 2019, a new report presented by Unwanted Witness, a Ugandan NGO, reveals that a vast number of companies do not comply with data privacy obligations. The report recognises an urgent need to enhance the Ugandan state’s capacity to enforce rules for the private sector while protecting the rights of citizens.
