New institute in Australia to explore ethics and AI

In Australia, the University of Sydney, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, and the Insurance Australia Group have announced their collaboration on the creation of the Gradient Institute, dedicated to promoting the creation of ethical artificial intelligence (AI). The not-for-profit institute will research the ethics of AI and develop ethical AI systems which ‘will provide better outcomes for both individuals and society as a whole’. The institute will also get involved in policy advocacy, public awareness, and providing training on the use and development of ethical AI systems. It is expected that the research and development work will result in open source ethical AI tools that could be used by the public and private sectors.
