Moscow adds facial recognition payment at 240 metro stations

The city of Moscow has added a facial recognition payment system called FacePay at 240 metro stations, becoming the city with the largest use of facial recognition technology in the world. Travellers can now link their bank and metro cards to the Moscow Metro application, look at the camera, and have their fare automatically deducted from their bank accounts. Authorities promised travellers that the system would recognise them even if they are wearing masks or glasses. Privacy advocates are, however, concerned that data could be used by security agencies to surveil citizens.
