Malaysia to take legal action against Meta

Malaysia prepares to take legal action against Meta over harmful content, weeks ahead or regional elections.

 Flag, Malaysia Flag

A year after its discontent with Meta’s handling of posts during its national elections, the government of Malaysia is prepared to take legal action against Facebook. Complaints surround the unfettered explosion of intolerable posts on sensitive issues in the country – content that has only served to ignite the socio-political and religious landscape.

According to the new administration, Meta, despite requests, has failed to regulate the barrage of toxic content on race, religion, impersonation, scam and the like. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission remains committed to taking action, though not yet clear, against the tech giant as the country is on the cusp of regional elections, during which a multi-ethnic coalition will go up against a conservative Muslim party.

Facebook is the most popular social media platform in the country.
