Major European operators sign MoU on Open RAN deployments

Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica, and Vodafone announced that they are joining forces to support the rollout of the Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN). In a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the four operators expressed their commitment to the implementation and deployment of Open RAN solutions that leverage 5G’s virtualised architectures. The operators will work together with ecosystem partners, including the O-RAN Alliance and policymakers in Europe, to ensure that Open RAN reaches competitive parity with traditional RAN solutions quickly. The industry is working towards standards and technical specifications that define open interfaces within the radio system, including hardware and software, which enables networks to be deployed and operated based on mix-and-match components from different suppliers.
