Los Angeles police ban use of external facial recognition systems

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has banned the use of facial recognition systems provided by third parties, demanding that its officers and detectives only use the Los Angeles County Regional Identification System. This system is maintained by county authorities and compares images input by the police against images of recognised criminals. The decision was taken after it was revealed that several detectives had used the Clearview AI facial recognition software platform without permission (Clearview compares images against millions of images available online). The illegal use of the software is now being investigated by the LAPD.
