Kenya to to issue digital ID cards

The Kenyan government has announced plans to issue 37 million digital ID cards in the next two months. The new digital ID programme was announced in 2019, but the High Court temporarily stopped it pending the hearing of three petitions opposing it. The court gave its judgement in January 2020. It found that there was need for an adequate and comprehensive legal framework prior to rolling out the programme. The government has since drafted regulations on data protection for the programme but these have not been approved by parliament. Project Liaison Officer, Philip Lemarasia also stated that there would be a mass registration exercise for those who had not enrolled for biometric registration.
