Journalist faces death and rape threats over tweet

A journalist working as a Brussels correspondent for the North Macedonia news agency Media Information Agency (MIA),Tanja Milevska, has faced death and rape threats on social media networks. These online attacks came after her tweet questioning Hungary’s Prime Minister and the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament (EP) recognition of the constitutional change of the name to ’North Macedonia’. She received threats by online trolls as well as individuals active in politics. The comments also aimed at discrediting her work as a journalist. The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) condemned the attacks, urging authorities to take action against people behind the threats and hateful comments. The Council of Europe (CoE) categorised this assault under ‘harassment and intimidation of journalists’. Milevska reported the threats to the police both in North Macedonia and Belgium.
