ITU releases report ‘Frontier technologies to protect the environment and tackle climate change’

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the UN have released a report entitled ‘Frontier technologies to protect the environment and tackle climate change’. The report was released to mark the celebration of Earth Day that has been celebrated virtually in view of COVID-19 and tackles how technologies could help achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs), namely SDG 13 on Climate Action. The document explores the role of emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and big data in combating climate change, improving water management, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing natural disasters.

The report also provides case studies of application of digital technologies to reduce air pollution and manage electronic waste.
