ITU launches focus group on AI for natural disaster management

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has launched a focus group on artificial intelligence (AI) for natural disaster management dedicated to supporting global efforts in understanding and modelling natural hazards and disasters. The group will explore best practices on the use of AI to support data, modelling, and effective communication in natural disaster management. It will also prepare non-normative deliverables (e.g. technical reports) on the use of AI in the aforementioned areas, and will work to develop educational materials in the field. The group is expected to develop a roadmap for AI activities (in the context of data, modelling, and communication technologies) in natural disaster management. Throughout its work, the group will cooperate with the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme.
