Independent news website Meduza outlawed by Russian authorities

Russian authorities have banned independent news website Meduza, stating it threatens the country’s constitutional order and security. The Committee to Protect Journalists has urged Russia to permit Meduza to operate without restrictions.

Russia’s General Prosecutor’s Office has deemed the activity of the Medusa Project – the legal entity behind the independent news website Meduza – as ‘undesirable’ and a ‘threat to the foundations’ of the country’s constitutional order and security. Entities that are classified as such are typically prohibited from operating in Russia, and anyone involved in their operations risks fines or imprisonment time.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has called on Russian authorities to allow Meduza to operate freely and cease banning outlets.
