ICANN issues report on IoT implications on DNS

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ (ICANN) Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) issued a report titled The DNS and the Internet of Things: Opportunities, Risks, and Challenges. The report discusses the interplay between the domain name system (DNS) and Internet of things (IoT) by stressing how IoT represents an opportunity and a risk to the DNS. While the DNS provides functions and data that can help make IoT more secure and stable, IoTs may pose a threat during distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. The report brings about five challenges involving the DNS and IoT industries:(a) developing a DNS library for IoT devices(b) training IoT and DNS professionals(c) creating a shared system that enables DNS operators to share information on IoT botnets(d) constructing system that enable DNS operators to handle DDoS attacks involving IoT devices(e) producing a system that enables DNS operators to measure how IoT uses the DNS. The purpose of the publication is to promote a discussion in the matter and as such it does not provide any recommendations or asks any actions to be taken by the ICANN community.
