IBM and Cisco partner on the Internet of Things

IBM and Cisco have concluded an agreement that would bring IBM’s Internet of Things (IoT) business analytics technology to Cisco’s routers. This would allow organisations in remote locations to use strong analytics capabilities through IoT enabled routers, rather than having to rely on cloud delivered services (i.e. uploading large amount of data in the cloud and having it processed there). In an example given by IBM, and cited by CIO Today, a company with employees who have to monitor the health and behaviour of critical machinery in remote environments would benefit from the combination of the IBM IoT platform and Cisco’s edge analytics; this will allow the organisation to more accurately plan for necessary maintenance and equipment upgrades.
