The high cost of Turkey’s crackdown

In The high cost of Turkey’s crackdown  David Kaye (writing in his personal capacity) explained some more personal and detailed stories behind the scenes of Turkey’s recent crackdowns and their repercussions. He also noted that ‘Turkey’s friends in the West need to do more to convince Erdoan [Turkey’s president] to recommit to the rule of law’. In spite of the serious current scenario, he ended this column with optimism: ‘Not long ago Turkey was on a path of commitment to protect those very rights and values. It’s not too late to return’. Kaye’s recent report (in his official capacity as UN Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression) makes specific recommendations to restore full effective exercise of the rights to freedom of opinion and expression.
