GSMA-Led Climate Initiative joined by the world’s largest mobile operator groups

Aiming at developing a mobile industry climate action roadmap in line with the Paris Agreement, the world’s largest mobile operator groups announced that they will unveil their climate impacts as part of a major new GSMA-led initiative. The 50 mobile operators, who made such a pledge account for more than two-thirds of mobile connections globally, are releasing their climate impacts, energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions via the internationally recognised CDP global disclosure system. This will consequently provide transparency for investors and customers working in the mobile sector. ‘As a result of these disclosures, mobile operators will be able to measure and understand their environmental impact, helping them to build sustainability into the heart of their businesses,’ said CDP CEO Paul Simpson. According to GSMA, this will be followed by the development of a decarbonisation pathway for the mobile industry, aligned with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), to be in place by February 2020.
