GSMA and Carbon Trust release report on ‘Enablement effect’

The GSM Association (GSMA) and Carbon Trust released a new report titled ‘The Enablement Effect’ focused on the impact of mobile communications technologies on carbon emission reductions. To quantify the total global avoided emissions, 14 countries (in 6 regions) were identified as a representative global sample. The report unveiled that the use of mobile technology enabled the reduction of 2135 million tonnes CO2 in 2018 which is close to the total emissions emitted yearly by Russia. The emissions savings were ten times greater than the global carbon footprint of the mobile industry itself. The report offers context and provides a high-level analysis of six categories of enabling mechanisms, along with case studies, namely smart buildings; smart energy; smart living, working, and health; smart transport and cities; smart agriculture; and smart manufacturing.
