Gamtel reveals cause of internet outage in Gambia

According to a news report, Deputy Managing Director of the Gambia Telecommunications Company (Gamtel) Lamin Tunkara has given an explanation as to what led to the general internet outage experienced in the country on 2 February 2021. According to Tunkara, the backup link that connects Gambia to the rest of the world was accidentally cut by the Gambia National Water & Electric Company (NAWEC) whilst undertaking some maintenance work. He further stated that although this is not the first time NAWEC’s work has led to a cable cut – what happened this time was of a greater magnitude since it affected other alternative internet routes leading to a total outage lasting several hours.
