French CNIL requests Clearview AI to stop using its biometric database without legal basis

According to Euronews, CNIL, the French data protection authority (DPA) has threatened to fine the facial recognition company Clearview AI for unlawfully collecting citizens’ data. CNIL stated that the company violated the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by collecting and using biometric data without a legal basis. According to the CNIL, Clearview AI also failed to “adequately and effectively address the rights of individuals, including requests for access to their data”. CNIL has launched an investigation into the company practices after first receiving complaints about its software in 2020.
