Evaluation of European Commission discloses third evaluation of code of conduct on illegal speech online

The European Commission conducted a third evaluation of the Code of Conduct on countering illegal speech online, which was established in 2016. The evaluation showed that 70% of illegal speech online was removed by major IT companies within 24 hours after notification. Although this is an improvement compared to previous years, there is still a lack of transparency and feedback to users about the removal of their content, as well as the effective persecution of the authors of illegal hate speech offensives. The Commission will continue to monitor the activities of IT companies and consider taking additional steps if the IT companies are not taking sufficient action.
