EU passed the WiFi4EU initiative

EU dedicated €120 million to provide free public Wi-Fi hotspots in up to 8,000 local communities by 2020. Municipalities and other public entities will be able to apply for funding via a simple and non-bureaucratic process. A grant will be awarded in a form of vouchers to buy the technical equipment. The connectivity costs will have to be covered by the applicants themselves. The initiative is a part of EU’s efforts announced during President Jean-Claude Juncker’s State of the Union 2016 address.
