EU FRA: Tech answers to COVID-19 should safeguard fundamental rights

The EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) has, in a press release, called on governments to adhere to fundamental rights principles even as they resort to technology to protect public health and overcome the COVID-19 pandemic. The release quoted FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty saying ‘technology can guide governments in navigating their responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, like all solutions, governments need to take care that respect for fundamental rights forms part of our public health strategies. This includes maintaining privacy and data protection legal safeguards.’ The release further made reference to FRA’s second report on the Coronavirus and its implication on fundamental rights in the EU, with recommendations on how governments can regularly assess the impact on people’s fundamental human rights in the management of the pandemic.
