EU to decide on mandatory common charger for smartphones

The EU will soon decide if it will make a universal charging connector for all smartphones mandatory. Members of the European Parliament insist on a common charger that should fit all mobile phones, tablets, e-book readers and other portable devices. Such a measure would not only make consumers’ life easier but also help reduce e-waste, given that, according to estimates, old chargers produce more than 51 000 tonnes of electronic waste per year.
